What is a Pinterest Group board?

For many of us, every little bit of Pinterest marketing support helps, especially as a creative business owner, and so the value that Pinterest group boards offers can be priceless. Let’s start back at the basics… what is a group board?

A Pinterest group board is a specific board, owned by one individual but run by multiple Pinners. That is, while one person acts as the admin for the Board, they can allow access to any number of individuals who can Pin to that board – we call them contributors. Any Pin posted by any of the contributors will show up on the home feed of anyone who follows the board, giving each contributor equal ownership over the content – and equal right to advertise and showcase their Pins.

Why use Pinterest Group boards?

So, that’s what a Pinterest group board is. But what do they do, and why should we be using them if we want to up our Pinterest marketing game?

As a creative business owner, you will already be well aware of the importance of reaching your target market; understanding that any activity that widens your reach is positive and worthwhile. When you think of a Pinterest group board as a portal to the networks of every board member, you start to see its value. If every board member has 100 separate followers, by posting a Pin in that group your content is suddenly being seen by all those hundreds of followers – it’s as simple as that.

Now that you understand how a group board works, chances are you want to join as many as you can. But how do you find the best ones to join, and how do you go about getting involved?

How to find them?

It starts with a search. The backend Pinterest marketing technology that the site has built allows you to search for any topic or subject, and then narrow the results page so that it only shows boards. The next step is quite manual but so far there doesn’t seem to be a way to refine this even further to only show group boards, so unfortunately you do have to spend some time clicking into the best boards and checking to see if they have multiple contributors or not. Once you’ve found a relevant Pinterest group board and decided you want to join, click on the “Request to Join” button and wait to be accepted.

If the roles are reversed and you have decided to create your own group board, first you must set up the board as normal. Once complete you can easily allow group requests by clicking on “Invite” next to your profile picture and turning on “Group Requests”. If anyone requests to join, you’ll receive a notification within Pinterest and by email – you can’t miss them!

How to get accepted?

And finally, my Tip to getting accepted onto your favourite boards: when you apply to be accepted, tell the Pinboard owner why you want to be a part of their contributor pool. As a creative business owner, passion and motivation are some of your best friends, and can only serve you well when applying for the support of others.
