5 ways to grow your Instagram with Pinterest
How Pinterest can help you!
First and foremost, let’s clear up a few of the key differences between Instagram and Pinterest. While both platforms are indeed led by image sharing and search, Pinterest marketing incorporates and offers far greater reach and advertising potential than Instagram, with a focus on linked content, valuable descriptions and re-Pins. Instagram, on the other hand, is simply all about the likes and engagement.
With that being said, Instagram is fast becoming one of the most popular social platforms available today, with Instagram marketing constituting a great deal of celebrity endorsements and paid-ads. If you are part of Instagram’s target audience – and in that they include pretty much anyone with a mobile device – then chances are you spend a segment of most days just scrolling and boosting your own presence through comments, likes and unique posts.
So, how can you use Pinterest marketing to boost your Instagram profile, and why should you even bother?

Using the power of Pinterest.
Pinterest was built to be both engaging and search-led, acting as a visual search engine for those seeking inspiration; offering up results that users can share, re-pin and click on. With a link-friendly design that juxtaposes Instagram’s inability to add more than one link on your profile, Pinterest becomes the perfect way to add value to your Instagram account, simply by linking great content back to it and ensuring your most popular posts get seen more.
How can you do that, I hear you ask?
Well, while Instagram marketing is all based on which posts are the newest; rewarding popularity with instant gratification; Pinterest marketing is a long game, relying on Pins popping up in different feeds and gradually reaching wider networks in line with its keywords and targeted audience. Both approaches add value, and when used in harmony, a complementary Pinterest and Instagram presence can ensure both short-term and long-term success.
All sounds great, right? So how do we go about making it happen?
Claiming your Instagram on Pinterest.
First up, you have to do something which is technically termed “Claiming” Instagram on your Pinterest account. This basically means that any content a Pinterest user shares directly from Instagram, will be linked to your profile – and any new fans of the content will be drawn straight back to you!
To do this, just head into your Pinterest account, click on the three dots in the top-right corner, and click on Claim. Pretty self-explanatory, but as soon as that’s set up you will be able to link your marketing efforts across both Pinterest and Instagram, and promote new followers on both platforms.
Adding your Instagram content to Pinterest
The next step to making Pinterest work for you and your Instagram marketing, is to copy each of your Insta-worthy posts over to Pinterest. Don’t make the mistake of doing this manually and just repeating the same content – within the Instagram app you can literally copy the post as a link on Pinterest, and then tailor the description so it works for your Pinterest audience. Remember all that work we did on keywords and understanding which search terms best define your Pinterest marketing efforts? Well, this is where that training comes in!

Creating specific boards for your Instagram content.
We’ve discussed the value of boards and group boards on a number of our other blog posts, but a collaboration between Instagram and Pinterest is where boards really come into their own. Use your Pinterest marketing to create boards that define different areas of your Instagram visuals, either by content style, season, or even product lines. Utilise your Instagram marketing efforts by sharing it with Pinterest too!
Use Pinterest to find new inspiration and content.
Lastly, to Pinterest itself. Pinterest is, first and foremost, a visual-led search engine, built to inspire and to provide beautiful imagery for a range of different sectors and markets. Take inspiration from others to create some all-new content for your Instagram; refreshing and updating your profile with a little help from some likeminded users. But make sure that they are free stock photos and if not then ask permission to the owner to use these photos.
The difference between social media and Pinterest is both subtle and vast, with Pinterest creating far greater business value but sometimes losing out on that personal touch – if you don’t do it right.
